For the last 20 years, volunteers from Penistone Round Table, Penistone Scouts, Penistone Town Council, Penistone Ladies Circle, Tangent and Penistone FM organise and deliver Penistone Mayors Parade and Gala Weekend.

Events have included a Comedy Night, Folk Concert, Rock Concert and a parade and gala. The event is delivered solely by volunteers with the mission to give the community of Penistone and the surrounding areas a day to enjoy.

In recent years the event has had a few setbacks mainly due to weather on gala Sunday, which has impacted on the finance to deliver future gala. However for 2017 the organisers are going all out in an effort to engage the community and make the weekend one of the best ever produced. We need our communities help to do this?

Set over the weekend 9th to the 11th of June, and already planned for this Gala in 2017, with full details to be released over the coming months, are a Comedy Night, Penistone’s own obstacle and colour run for kids aged 6 to 99 PENISTONE X RUN, an afternoon showcase of local bands and musicians, a Saturday night concert featuring a top tribute act (hint: TT) and a Sunday gala and parade with an afternoon children’s talent contest (Penistone’s GOT TALENT) and stalls and amusements for all ages.

All of this will have a theme of STAR WARS to celebrate 40 years since the original release and to capture the imagination of our local children.

Organisers are looking for local community groups and schools to get involved, runners, stalls, sideshows, local bands, musicians and talent, vehicle and walking floats for our parade and volunteers to help out. The aim is to make the weekend something that the whole community can enjoy and be proud of.

Jon Gilbert of Penistone Round Table said “Gala weekend in 2017 will be something that the whole community engages in and hopefully brings us all together. Lots of housing has sprung up in the last 5 years and a lot of new residents don’t know what Penistone has to offer so this is an opportunity for local clubs, societies and schools to showcase what makes Penistone so unique. The town with a village community”

Elaine Edwards from Penistone Guides said “The gala lets us showcase our movement with the local community and recruit new members, we feel privileged to be involved and to support this great community event”
