Martin is the HR Director at Penistone FM and helped create the station from an idea to building the studios from scratch with a small number of people. Martin started in Hospital Radio back in the late
80’s with short spells at Radio Aire and Select FM to help him along the way. He also worked at Sheffield Arena as Media Manager, looking after media relations during the World Student Games and got the buzz to do more in the industry.
Martin is also the station manager at Barnsley Hospital Broadcasting and is proud to see many of his former trainees working on local and regional radio stations, so very busy in the radio business and volunteers.
Martin enjoys running the young training programme and outreach projects at Penistone FM, giving young people a taste of radio, news and media to help build their confidence through speaking and listening skills on short courses.
As well as family life, Martin also enjoys travel, music and hill walking (in his spare time!).
Q. What’s your favorite website?
www.am-online.com is one of the best for car news
Q. What was the first record you ever bought?
Single – This was The Drifters and Up on the Roof – still a classic. On vinyl, yes those black plastic things that my trainees say “Oh yes I think my dad used to have one of those players”.
Album – However first album was Queen 1 and every other one after that. Watched Queen from being a support act to Mott the Hoople (Roll away the stone) for those of you who know your music! Through to Live Aid and the last time they played in the UK at Knebworth in the middle of 200,000 people and Freddie had the audience in the palm of his hand.
Q. If you were on the TV show ‘Come Dine with Me’, what would you cook for
your guests?
I would cook them, Homemade Thai fishcakes, Peppercorn Steak with thick cut chips and rocket salad followed by my friend Nigella’s Chocolate Cherry Trifle.
Q. What job would you like to do if you didn’t work in radio?
I suppose it would be back to hiring nice boats out to people in Bermuda and relaxing.
