TWIDDLE MATS – Support Patients with Dementia by Knitting a Twiddle Mat

Twiddle Mats are a knitted or crocheted mat with interesting bits and bobs attached to it.  They have been designed and developed to provide simple stimulation for active hands, while promoting increased flexibility and brain stimulation. Many patients with dementia have found the Twiddle Mats reassuring and comforting.

Barnsley Hospital would be delighted if any willing knitters or people who can crochet could help them to create Twiddle Mats as part of their dementia awareness work. Don’t worry if you’re not an expert; the pattern is very simple. Knit or crochet a 15 inch approximate square – you can donate them for others to decorate or add decoration yourself.

If you aren’t a knitter, but still want to support the cause, they would welcome donations of new wool, buttons, beads, ribbons, zips, or anything that could be used to enhance the Twiddle Mats’ safely.

When choosing colours, please bear in mind that their female patients prefer pastel colours and shades, whereas their male patients would rather have strong, contrasting colours.

If you would like further information about Twiddle Mats, please contact the Dementia Nurse Specialist on 01226 431 678 or e-mail victoria.faxon@nhs.net
