Further tests are to be carried out to try to establish the cause of death of a nine-year-old who died, along with his father, in a blaze at a house in Tennyson Close, Penistone, on Wednesday 22 October.

Police have confirmed that a post-mortem examination on 44-year-old Darren Sykes revealed the cause of death “was compatible with the effects of the fire.”

But they said further tests are to be carried out on son Paul to establish the cause of his death.

A second son, 12-year-old Jack, remains in a critical condition in hospital.

The fire is being treated as suspicious, but police are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident. Initial investigations suggest the fire was started deliberately.
